Microsoft has been launching Windows smartphones since they bought Nokia in 2013. Making Windows a prominent Smartphone platform along with iOS and Android. However they seem to give up on this idea, as Microsoft announced today that they are planning to reform their Smartphone business, specifically hardware! They have also revealed that they have sacked around 7800 employees mainly from the phone sector of Microsoft.
This move is not coming easy, they will face numerous losses and damages. The approximate loss is around $7.6 billion. This includes all Nokia’s assets and other charges they will face in reforming their business. The charge will be no less than $750 million to $850 million.
An email from Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO to all employees stated
“We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem, including our first-party device family, in the near-term, we’ll run a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility.”
Nothing is clear about what Microsoft’s plan will be for the smartphone market, but this surely indicates that Microsoft will release lesser number of Lumia phones in future.
There are recent rumors that Microsoft is working on two High-end smartphones for launch, along with Windows 10, and they won’t come in Lumia sub bracket. As per rumors, they are named as Cityman and Talkman.
