Chinese rising phone maker Xioami is unstoppable in setting new standards for the smartphones. Recently, the Xiaomi Director of Product Management Donovan Sung has unveiled one of the smartest features of the prototype. It is the under-display selfie camera. A video has been shared on Twitter, which shows the device and also compares it with the regular Xiaomi Mi 9.
Interestingly, both of the devices shares the same look except the prototype has the camera under its display which is notch-free.
Apart from the outer looks and design, both the phones are also functionally same. It is shown in the video itself, the person in the video unlocks both the phones and open same app on both devices and making it clear that both are identical devices.
It is clear from the tweet that Xiaomi’s future smartphones could have an under-display camera.
Xiaomi tweeted “Do you want a sneak peek at the future? “Here you go … introducing you to Under-Display Camera technology!” followed by the video.

As per Xiaomi SVP Wang Xiang, the under-display camera technology is, “the ultimate solution for a Full Screen Display coexisting with a front camera.”
He tweeted “Xiaomi is currently exploring the possibility of hiding the front-facing camera under the display. When the selfie camera is activated, the display area over the camera lens becomes transparent in an instant, allowing light to enter.”
The prototype features a 20 mega pixel camera buried under the transparent display made up of a low reflective glass.
For which the company explained “The transparent display doubles as the camera lens, By allowing more light into the lens, the display-embedded camera combo is able to produce perfect selfies, clear and crisper than the pinhole camera solution when the camera is activated.”
Xiaomi also cleared the air regarding the launch of the new Mi 8 device and said it will launch on June 12.
Many other Android OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are also working on this in-screen camera technology and most probably will be seen in Android phones within 2 years.
Famous phone makers like Samsung and Oppo also working on the same. As you may know Samsung has already brought Infinity-O displays with punch hole cameras in its devices. Hence, Samsung is expected to bring the under-display technology to its mobile phones by year 2024 and meanwhile, Oppo has also revealed their in-display camera prototype recently.
The camera when comes buried under the display, naturally increases the display use by allowing the more usable space on display. It doesn’t budge on the screen and looks like a whole simple display. However, there are no remarks for the touch-sensitivity of the display.
So, this was all about Xiaomi’s prototype featuring the future Under-display camera. We can expect this technology in the next coming Xiaomi phones, may be Mi 10 next year.
However, there was a chance that the company could have featured this technology in the upcoming Mi Mix 4 which is rumoured to get released on 12 June. But, its clearly not possible now and we have to wait till the next release.
